Jaana Remes: Senior Fellow, McKinsey Global Institute

Guru BanavarDr. Jaana Remes is a principal for the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), McKinsey’sbusiness and economics research arm, based in San Francisco.

Since 2003, Dr. Remes has led MGI’s research on productivity, competitiveness, and growth. Her most recent research sheds light on the changing global manufacturing landscape through case studies of diverse industries and draws implications for North American companies and policy makers. Other recent work looks at the rising urban consuming class and shifting economic power of cities across the globe, as well as the patterns of urban growth and renewal across the Americas. Her previous research includes an in-depth analysis of how different policies have contributed to industry competitiveness and growth; the impact of multinational companies on emerging economies; as well as in-depth assessments of the barriers to competitiveness and growth across a range of economies, including the US, Canada, UK, Finland, Sweden, Brazil, and South Korea. She also has also led MGI’s research agenda on energy, with a focus on understanding the microeconomic underpinnings of global energy demand growth and the opportunity to reduce energy demand growth through higher energy productivity. She advises global business and government leaders on related topics and frequently contributes to policy debates through articles and conference presentations.

Prior to joining MGI, Jaana was a consultant on McKinsey corporate finance and strategy projects in the US and Mexico, primarily working with software, semiconductor, and financial sector clients. Before joining McKinsey, she worked as a research fellow and consultant at several international development agencies and universities.
